Saying Cheese - While capturing images ?

 Hi Biomeds !

Today, we will learn about a new concept in the series "Make it Simple".

Saying Cheese😬 - While capturing images ? This is not only for photograph .

But for ORTHOPANTOMOGRAPH (OPG)

What is Orthopantomography or OPG ?

Orthopantomography or OPG is an X-ray scan , used for scanning dental X-rays. OPG is a dental X-ray machine that captures the panoramic view of the person's lower part of the face. OPG  X-ray captures the teeth, gums, jaw bones (upper & lower) in a single image. This also takes images of the entire temporomandibular joint ( a joint which connects your jaw bone to the skull). OPG dental x-ray is different from other simple traditional x-ray procedure followed by dentists.

Why OPG is needed and in what case ?

Dentists recommend Orthopantomography or OPG to evaluate the dental condition of the patient, which require examination of the entire oral cavity of the patient. OPG x-ray is recommended by the physician in several cases include

  • General examination of entire oral cavity
  • Tooth impaction
  • Examining the growth of wisdom teeth
  • Fracture in tooth or jaw bone
  • Periodontitis
  • Inspect any severe infections in the gums
  • Before opting for dental implantation
  • Disease associated with temporomandibular joint , sinusitis & other conditions affecting the shape or quality of teeth.
What does an OPG machine consist of ?

The parts of an OPG x-ray machine consists of
  1. An x-ray tube or a horizontal rotating arm consisting of an x-ray source & a moving cassette / film to detect the x-ray image.
  2. Head position which includes a chin rest, bite block stick, forehead rest & back head support.
  3. Other parts include control buttons & keys necessary for operating the device.

Positioning of the patient for an OPG dental x-ray - Some regular measures must be followed by every patient during scanning procedure. Patient must be asked to remove any metal objects or jewelry before the scanning procedure.

The patient's head must be placed firmly in the middle area (i.e. between the x-ray generator and the detector). The patient should position their chin on the chin rest provided and he/she is asked to bite gently on the sterile bite stick for achieving more stabilization. After achieving a proper position, the horizontal rotating arm, rotates around the patient's head. This in turn captures images of the entire oral cavity.

The overall Orthopantomography dental x-ray procedure is performed in 10 seconds or less than 20 seconds.

Hope the information is useful for you friends :-)
