Why are we asked to drink enough water before an Ultrasound scan ? Here is the reason or science behind it .
Hi Biomeds!
Welcome to BiomedXplorer !
Here is an interesting topic for you.
Have you ever wonder ? Why the patients undergoing ultrasound are asked to drink water before the scan ? or Why do you need to enter the scan room with a full bladder condition ?
Let me explain you 📑
We already know that Ultrasound is the imaging of inner organs in the body especially the abdominal region. It creates images of the internal structures in real time.
During an Ultrasound, high frequency sound waves are emitted through body tissues to produce images of internal organs. These sound waves hit different mediums like air and other body fluids when they transmit through the tissues. The high frequency sound waves strike through the internal organs and they reflect back by producing images. The acoustic waves travel at a different speed throughout the body.
The acoustic waves or sound waves travel faster in water than in air. The speed of sound is also greater when travelling in water. Moreover, when you are having a full bladder during ultrasound imaging, the water in the bladder enhances the movement of sound waves inside the patient's body (mainly the abdominal cavity). Therefore, we conclude that sound waves can travel easier through water medium. So, this is why a person undergoing an ultrasound scan is asked to completely fill their bladder with water before the scanning procedure.
