Pavlovian Theory of Conditioning - A talk about AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Hi Biomeds !

Let's discuss today with something new and interesting to you 💬.

PAVLOV DOG EXPERIMENT vs ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

We will begin with AI . What is AI or Artificial Intelligence ?

Artificial Intelligence is nothing but training a computer system, robot or a software to think differently or we can say more intelligent. We can make the machine to think in a similar way as we do.

AI does the exact work on how humans work, think and make decisions. The main aim of developing AI is to develop an intelligent system or software for problem solving and make living easier.

So now, What is the relation between Pavlov theory & AI ?

Ivan Pavlov was a Russian  physiologist who devoted his life to science. Another interesting thing is that he is the first Russian who was awarded the Nobel prize . He own it by 1904 for physiology and medicine. Pavlov did his research work on the physiology of digestion in dogs, where he redirected the animal's digestive fluids outside their body , so that it can be measured.

While doing his research, he came to know that the dogs began to salivate when the person who usually feeds come in front of them, rather than salivating in the presence of food. This observations made him to bring new experimental test which results in "Pavlovian Conditioning".

Pavlov thought of a new idea . He started to give food to the dog after a stimulus ( the sound of a bell ). After few days, dogs started to salivate in response to the stimulus even though in the absence of food. So at last he concluded, classical conditioning is a behavioral mechanism. It states that, when a conditioned stimulus (i.e. bell sound) is paired with unconditioned stimulus (i.e. food) which result in a unconditioned response (i.e. secretion of saliva). Over the period of training in the same way, the result is dog started to salivate (conditioned response) for the conditioned stimulus (bell sound).

Do you think how this conditioning is related to Artificial Intelligence ? Let me "Make it Simple"

The best example for this is, In E-commerce websites or any online shopping sites, have you ever noticed ? the products or items are suggested based on your interest or recent search . The software learns your interests and activity for a time period and it automatically recommends products or any services based on your search history or items you have bought.

The data's are being collected and analyzed through AI or machine learning. So here, conditioning is used in such a way that, the software system is trained and it learns to provide smart recommendations for those who visit the sites. Conditioning also helps AI to make better predictions as humans do.
