Identifying Valvular Heart Defects from Phonocardiogram signal using LabVIEW

Project Number 1

Identifying Heart Valvular Defects from Phonocardiogram signal using LabVIEW

Abstract - Heart valve allows blood to flow through the heart in single direction. There are four heart valves namely aortic, mitral, tricuspid or pulmonary. If there is any defect or damage in the heart valves, then we call it is as Valvular heart defect. The valvular defects are Aortic stenosis, Aortic regurgitation, Mitral valve prolapse etc. The major cause of heart valve defects is either congenital (a birth defect) or due to degenerative conditions that increase with age and other physical conditions.

In this project, we are developing a software in LabVIEW (a graphical programming interface used to analyze and design complicate programming system) for detecting heart valve abnormalities from Phonocardiogram (PCG) signal. Phonocardiograph is the recording of heart sounds (Auscultation) or murmurs during a cardiac cycle. Phonocardiogram on the other hand is the recording of mechanical activities of the heart. PCG signal is taken for analysis, feature extraction and other filtering or processing techniques are applied in the signal.  Then by extracting distinguishing features, normal and abnormal signal is differentiated and type of abnormality is found.
